In open toe shoe season and with fall just around the corner, your nails probably need just a little TLC. Healthy nails are important - especially when you want to show them off! So to help you out, here are a few things to remember for your nails to look their best.
~Clean & Kept~
Moisture is important for nails to be able to grow and to avoid any unwanted tears or hangnails. Applying a cuticle oil nightly can also greatly enhance the health of cuticles. It also probably goes without saying that keeping hands and nails clean are essential to nail upkeep.
Applying a layer of nail hardener daily can give an extra boost to nail strength when needed.
Natural supplements of folic acid and biotin can also improve strength and durability of both nails and hair.
Another good tool is the use of a “soft” nail file that won’t damage the nail and keep it with you to help with any hangnails or uneven cracks.
~Harmful Habits to Avoid~
Usually, the least amount of chemicals that are used on the nails, the better. So it is a good idea to use an acetone-free nail polish remover.
When getting nails done at a salon, ask them not to clip off the cuticles. They are there to act as a barrier to keep bacteria out and prevent infection. After they are done, be sure to give them a rest and use the 5 Day Rule (5 days between fills with clean nails.)
Water is also not a friend to your nails. Exposure to water for long periods of time can leave your nails thin and cracked - so remember to use gloves when washing dishes and other chores involving water.
With these tips in mind, you will be well on your way to improving the health of your nails and looking your best no matter what time of the year or the weather conditions.
