There are quite a lot of beauty products out there that either contain parabens or make a lot of effort to broadcast the fact that their products do not contain them. So what are parabens and should you be worried about them in your beauty products?
What are Parabens?
Parabens are most commonly used as a chemical preservative in order to stop the growth of bacteria and fungus. They include synthetic compounds such as methylparaben, ethylparaben, propylparaben, butylparaben, isobutylparaben.
Where are Parabens found?
They can be found in almost 90% of normal groceries you would pick up at the store. They can be found in deodorants, toothpastes, shampoos, conditioners, lotions and various makeup products.
Are Parabens dangerous?
According to the FDA, parabens are safe in small amounts but the worry comes with thinking about cumulative exposure which could be linked to a pretty diverse range of health problems.
They have been known to disrupt hormone function and we know from a British study from 2004 that parabens have the ability to penetrate the skin and remain in breast tissue as 5 different parabens were found in 19 out of 20 women tested. They have also been linked to reproductive, immunological, neurological and skin irritation problems. Although there has not been enough research to link parabens as a cause of these problems, there is just not enough known about their long-term effects.
Since there is not a lot known about their long-term effects, it is highly advisable to try and stay away from exposing your body to them as much as possible. This is why all of our products we produce at Golden Star Beauty are always paraben-free. Your health and safety as a consumer comes first! Besides, you will always know that the product you are getting is freshly produced and has not been sitting on a shelf for months. Fresher is always better :)
